This work portrays a possible future for the city of Dunedin (current population about 110,000) in New Zealand after a few hundred years of global warming and mass immigration from other parts of an overcrowded world. The city would be almost unrecognizable to a person from our time. Low lying areas have been submerged by the rising sea level but engineering and architectural solutions offer some new lifestyle opportunities there. A high density sprawl of multistorey buildings clings to all but the steepest hillsides and reaches to the highest peaks of the peninsula hills. Wind farms on distant ridges provide one source of local energy, warm temperate food crops dominate public and private gardens to boost the food supply. A very diverse mix of humanity and cultural elements is evident in the foreground.

Climate change is one more challenge facing human civilization and the natural environment in addition to or in partnership with continuing global population growth and the conflicts over resources that may be increasingly masked by various forms of religious and political extremism. This painting is not intended to be a vision of Utopia - the increased police presence hints at the social challenges we’ll face in a densely populated multicultural city - but it is optimistic. Our species has proven itself to be one of the most “successful” to have emerged on this planet. Humanity and civilization have survived many challenges and set-backs, we should survive and prosper into the future with the help of science, the technology it affords us, and intelligent leadership.
